Creating resilient landscapes for a sustainable Aotearoa.

"Restoring biodiversity. Strengthening ecosystems. Creating resilient landscapes"

Scientifically Validated, Locally Trusted

Practical, expert environmental and horticultural advisory for Northland landscapes.

Nikau Consultancy is a Northland-based environmental consultancy specialising in ecological restoration, native planting design, biodiversity enhancement, and sustainable land management.

Founded by environmental consultant Kayla Raines (B.App.Sc.), a selected IPPS Six Pack recipient, the consultancy delivers science-based advice and practical solutions that restore ecological function, strengthen biodiversity, and create resilient landscapes for future generations. Every project is tailored to the unique characteristics of the site, ensuring thoughtful, sustainable outcomes that work in harmony with New Zealand's natural environment.

Biodiversity & Land Management

Drawing on my core qualifications in Biodiversity Management, I design practical strategies to enhance local ecosystems, protect waterways, and restore native habitats and native fauna. By blending scientific data with natural systems, I help private landowners and lifestyle block owners establish resilient, self-sustaining landscapes that thrive under Northland’s unique environmental pressures.

Funding & Project Advisory

Navigating regional grants, environmental funding pools, and community conservation schemes can be complex. I act as an advisory partner, helping community groups and landowners identify available funding options, align their project goals with grant criteria, and build structured plans to ensure their ecological visions are successfully funded and executed.

Biosecurity & Production Quality Control

My background includes six years of direct experience inside native horticultural nurseries combined with a New Zealand Certificate in Horticulture Production (Level 4). This gives me a profound, root-level understanding of what it takes to grow resilient, high-quality native stock. I know exactly how commercial production should operate to maintain genetic integrity, achieve optimal crop health, and prevent biological risk.

While my primary focus is wide-scale environmental strategy, I retain the capability to advise on specialized nursery mechanics. I can assist producers in troubleshooting propagation challenges, refining native crop resilience, and designing proactive Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies.

This deep production insight ensures that whether I am designing a large-scale ecosystem blueprint or advising on plant supply, my recommendations are grounded in absolute commercial reality and elite botanical knowledge.

I bridge the gap from the commercial nursery and the working farmer directly to everyday gardeners—whether you are enriching an established rural landscape or starting with a completely blank canvas, I can design a comprehensive, tailored planting plan to bring your vision to life with my extensive knowledge of NZ Native plants.

"I believe effective environmental management must bridge advanced academic science with practical, hands-on reality. I do not offer generic templates; I work directly with you and your natural systems to deliver measurable, thriving outcomes on the ground."

Understanding Riparian, Wetland, and Dune Ecosystems

New Zealand's diverse natural landscapes are home to various ecosystems, each playing a vital role in maintaining ecological balance. Among these, riparian, wetland, and dune ecosystems are particularly important. Riparian zones are the interfaces between land and a river or stream, acting as buffers that filter pollutants, stabilise banks, and provide habitat for wildlife.

Wetlands, including swamps and marshes, are areas where water covers the soil, either permanently or seasonally. These ecosystems are crucial for water purification, flood control, and supporting a rich diversity of plant and animal species.

Dune ecosystems, found along coastlines, are shaped by wind and waves. They protect inland areas from storms, provide habitats for unique flora and fauna, and are essential for maintaining coastal health. Protecting and enhancing these ecosystems not only benefits biodiversity but also improves water quality and prevents erosion.

By investing in specialised riparian, wetland and duneland planting services, property owners can contribute to the restoration of these vital areas, ensuring a healthier environment for future generations.
