About Nikau Consultancy
The Nikau Consultancy Story
Grown in the Bush
My connection to the New Zealand landscape isn't something I discovered in a university lecture theatre—it is in my DNA. I was raised homeschooled in the dense native bush up the Whanganui River, coming from a family of lifelong bushmen and farmers. From my earliest days, I learned to read the land not from textbooks, but by living in harmony with it. I learned how forests breathe, how waterways shift, and how ecosystems naturally sustain themselves when left to thrive.
The Catalyst on the Tutukaka Coast
While my upbringing gave me an instinctual understanding of the wilderness, my true professional pathway began right here in Northland. Living in Whangarei, my partner and I started our own land care group along the Tutukaka coastline in Matapouri.
Getting our hands in the dirt, rallying the community, and working to restore that specific, beautiful stretch of coast was a turning point. It made me realize that protecting these fragile environments required more than just passion and volunteer hours—it required structured strategy, funding pathways, and rigorous, evidence-based science. That grassroots experience on the Tutukaka coast was the ultimate catalyst that drove me to dedicate my life to environmental work.
Refined by Science
To complement my hands-on passion with technical expertise, I earned a Bachelor of Applied Science with a major in Biodiversity Management, followed by a New Zealand Certificate in Horticulture Production (Level 4). Over the next six years, I immersed myself in the governance side of conservation, serving on the Northland Conservation Advisory Board. During my tenure on the board, I transitioned into native horticultural nursery production, gaining six years of industry experience. This journey taught me the essential skills needed to cultivate resilient plants capable of thriving in Northland's challenging coastal conditions.
Why I Founded Nikau Consultancy
I founded Nikau Consultancy to bridge the gap between academic theory and practical, real-world dirt.
Too often, environmental consultancy results in dense reports that don't work for the people actually managing the land. On the flip side, planting without a scientific blueprint leads to wasted resources and lost biodiversity.
Because I have lived both sides—from running a community land care group to providing technical biosecurity oversight for commercial nurseries—I know exactly what works. I look at every project with the instinct of a bushman, the community-focus of a land care founder, and the precise mind of an environmental scientist. My goal is simple: to help landowners, nurseries, and community groups build thriving, self-sustaining ecosystems that will last for generations.
